Pray for Wisdom

Lord’s Prayer Focus: The Father’s Provision

The Father knows that His sons and daughters have needs. Some needs are physical, some emotional, and some spiritual. We are needy people, and that’s okay! The Father loves to respond to the hearts of His children when they come to Him humbly and desperately. Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread…” (Matt 6:11). At the Father’s table, He has prepared for all of us more than enough to provide. You are invited to pull up a chair and to seek His provision.

Proverbs 4:4-9 (ESV)
4“Let your heart hold fast my words;
    keep my commandments, and live.
5 Get wisdom; get insight;
    do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.
6 Do not forsake her, and she will keep you;
    love her, and she will guard you.
7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom,
    and whatever you get, get insight.
8 Prize her highly, and she will exalt you;
    she will honor you if you embrace her.
9 She will place on your head a graceful garland;
    she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.”

James 1:5 (ESV) “5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

God loves when we ask for good things. He loves giving good gifts to his children. There are many times where God may not give what we request because it is not as good as what he has planned. However, asking for wisdom is one request that God will not refuse. It is important enough that he gave us the book of Proverbs. Even Solomon, when given a blank check from God, thought that wisdom was most vital.

Within the book of Proverbs, there are many passages, like the one above, that express the absolute necessity of wisdom. While we all would agree that wisdom is important, how often do we pray for wisdom? How often are we seeking out older, wiser people and asking for (and listening to) their advice? How often do we heed the counsel of our parents and guardians? Within witnessing, wisdom is vital. Knowing when to speak, and when to be silent and listen can change the course of a conversation. Or, put another way, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” (Proverbs 25:11)

Consider:
  • Do you pray for wisdom?
  • How does wisdom interact with your witness?

Prayer Points
  1. Pray for God’s wisdom in how to best witness to your friends, neighbors, and coworkers.
  2. Pray for wisdom in your conversations with others.
